WE Connect to increase gender diversity.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Gender Report 2020, women represent only 32% of the global renewable energy workforce and 21% in the wind industry compared to 22% in traditional energy industries, like oil and gas. When considering women in leadership positions, these numbers dwindle to single digits. The economic benefits for companies with women in leadership positions are well documented. As South Africa transitions to a low carbon energy sector, it just makes sense to connect the pool of talented women, nurture young talent and facilitate growth towards a diverse renewable energy sector.
South Africa does have forums and conferences specific for women in energy, but to date, there’s been no platform with a specific focus on connecting women in renewable energy.
Conferences tend to be well attended by women in mid to senior positions, but there’s a need for a platform that is open to women regardless of where they are in their career.
This is where WE Connect comes in.
WE Connect creates opportunities that are open to all to increase gender diversity in the renewable energy industry in South Africa.
